We live in an incredible day and age. Smart phones, high speed internet, tablets and Wi-Fi have changed the face of the planet to be sure.
Allowing for easy access to information, resources and allowing for the potential to connect and bond with others on a global scale. How do most of us use these technological marvels? Looking at videos of a cat riding a room cleaning robot wearing a shark costume.
2 Timothy 2:16
“But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,”
With the flood of social media and mindless banter, I think it truly impossible to focus on your Christian walk while your face is glued to your smart phone. I am personally guilty of this. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram; all these social media outlets are cool, and can be very entertaining, but how am I serving God in real life, when I am distracted by a virtual one?
This celebrity said this, that celebrity is wearing that; it’s all trivial garbage. Are our lives so empty and meaningless that we must fill the void with gossip and mindless entertainment? Isn’t that what God is supposed to do? Fill the emptiness in our lives?
“But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless”
It is so very easy these days to lose sight of God and become distracted. Or even to replace God with the things of this Earth.
” Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
I make my living on Social Media. Blogs and Facebook are my bread and butter; and I am thankful for that. However, if I let it consume me, if I let it take control of my life and replace God; then I have failed him. I will have failed myself too. My Mother, rest her soul, always told me to, “keep my eyes on the cross…”. I never really knew what that meant until a few years ago.
I had become so engrossed in social media and the pointless ramblings of the Main Stream Media, that it was affecting my home life and my Marriage. I know personally, how easy it is to get caught up in worldly matters. How by very definition, I had turned my eyes away from the cross.
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.”
I felt empty. Even though God had given me the most amazing Wife and Son ever, I still felt a void inside me that needed to be filled. What I was feeling was the absence of God. I didn’t know it at the time, and tried replacing it with all manner of technology and hype. Video Games, Music, Movies… all these things are good and entertaining, but when I let them consume me and dominate my life; I had lost my way. I ignored the beauty and gifts that God had given me. But God is good! He gave me an escape plan.
1 Corinthians 10:13
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it”
I went back to church. As time passed, I realized how I had fallen and was able to pick myself back up. I was able to start walking the path again and started to mend my life, my marriage and my soul. Don’t let the things of this world distract you from what’s important. God, Family, Friends… It’s never too late to go back to God. Put down the smart phone and pick up your Bible. You’ll be amazed at how it can fill the void inside you.
